As a fledgling reporter, Fletch is doing more flailing than anything else. His managing editor's got him pegged for the society pages, but the kind of society Fletch gets involved with is anything but polite. His first big interview, a millionaire lawyer with a crooked streak and an itch to give away some of his ill-gotten gains, ends up dead in the News-Tribune's parking lot before Fletch can ask question number one. So Fletch ends up going after the murderer instead, and ends up learning a thing or two about crime and punishment.

Thanks to William Dufris, this title, first released in 1985, hasn't lost its sparkle--or its humor. Fletch is a fledgling reporter who is summarily removed by his editor from his assignment of writing obituaries. ("The deceased never accomplished anything in 56 years.") Instead he is to cover the story of a lawyer's $5 million gift to an art museum. But before the interview, the lawyer is found murdered in the newspaper's parking lot. Naturally, Fletch investigates. Fletch and most of McDonald's other characters are hilarious. Dufris appropriately voices the rapid exchanges between Fletch and his prey. As narrator, Dufris can project grim jocularity or feigned innocence when called upon to do so. A.L.H. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine

This comic thriller in the Fletch series takes us back to Fletch as a fledgling newspaper reporter who wants to get promoted out of the society pages. His chance comes when Donald Habek, a wealthy lawyer, is shot dead. Fletch competes with Biff Wilson, the crime reporter, to investigate the murder, and this leads to interviews of many oddball characters in various strange situations. The story, which PW called "wild, ribald and swift,'' ends in a mad scramble, with Biff enraged at the competition and the police trying to arrest Fletch. Major ad/promo; author tour.
